Lyrics

I was in over my head, like a child in storm and waves
Tried so hard to swim until it was clear I could not be saved
I asked you one last time, with my last mouthful of air
to show me kindness and reach out your hand
But this you did not spare.

Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues, oh oh, on the way down
Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues and oh no not willing to drown

At first, I was unnerved, the grim hush of the descent
I gave my body over to ache from the shock of the event
But I wisely used my time and found not liquid death,
but how to chart the weather and a new wind of second breath.

Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues, oh oh, on the way down
Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues and oh no not willing to drown

When I finally got the courage to set aside polite
To risk the weight of honesty over a mannered lightness
I fell under the surface and watched you from below
With only time to measure out how deep these waters go.

Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues, oh oh, on the way down
Sea foam above me, green all around I’m
counting the leagues and oh no not willing to drown

Now I walk in a city of means and methods of the mad
Machiavellian ostriches: rows of heads buried in the sand
what I’ve learned is what I’ve learned: what serves and what detracts
But warm love or chilly war my heart remains intact.

After I recovered, I studied sea and land,
the ebb and flow of fleets, the strategies of man
So much effort to preserve a sense of height and power
When these divides with time and tide will all be devoured
And next time I find myself standing on a pier
Looking at a brewing sky, gauging how severe
With heart bold and open, I’ll size up the risk
And know when to swim, and when to resist.
